A Guide to Indoor Outdoor Porcelain Flooring

Posted on 18th February 2022

When it comes to performance, porcelain flooring is an exceptionally high performer in almost any environment. Over the last few years, indoor outdoor tiles have become an increasingly popular trend among designers and homeowners thanks to their versatility and durability.

A seamless indoor outdoor porcelain tiling scheme is the perfect way to create an aesthetic that extends beyond the inside of your house, and brightens up the outdoors too!

What is the indoor outdoor living trend?

The ‘indoor-outdoor’ trend refers to using the same or similar styles of porcelain slabs both indoors and outdoors to create a seamless transition between these spaces.
This extends the desired aesthetic of your home smoothly, which is especially beneficial if you take as much pride in your outdoor areas as you do with the indoor ones!

The aim is often to try to integrate nature into your indoor living areas, incorporating natural light and plants where possible. On top of using matching or similar porcelain slabs, indoor outdoor living is complemented well by large openings, such as sliding doors and windows, and through the use of outdoor furniture.

A great way to achieve this aesthetic is through using some of our light grey porcelain tiling, for example our Manhattan Grey tiles, or the Quartz Grey tiles, extending the modern look from inside to outside your home.

Can outdoor porcelain tiles be used indoors?

Outdoor porcelain tiles can be used indoors, and it’s actually a very popular way to create a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living areas.

Most of the time, porcelain flooring doesn’t require harsh cleaning chemicals to keep the tiles looking brand new. A simple sweep and wipe with a cloth is enough to keep your patio beautifully clean.

Is porcelain good for an outdoor floor?

Porcelain is great for outdoor flooring, because porcelain paving tiles have an extremely low porosity level (this means that the slabs don’t absorb as much liquid which minimises the risk of staining and water damage).

Porcelain flooring is also incredibly durable and high-quality, which makes them perfect for high traffic areas. The patio tiles are highly resistant to scratches and abrasions so you don’t need to worry about general wear and tear either.

Equally, porcelain tiles are designed to mimic the look of natural tiles, creating a beautiful aesthetic.

Porcelain paving has some benefits over natural stone, thanks to its consistent appearance and easier installation.

Porcelain is equally great for indoor flooring, as well as outdoor. This is thanks to its strength, durability and beauty. It’s particularly useful for high-traffic areas such as bathrooms, kitchens and hallways because of its resistance to scratches and stains, as well as its water resistance.

Indoor outdoor porcelain tiles: The specifications

Porcelain Paving Direct offers a variety of sizes and options when it comes to paving options. They all come with a certain slip rating for safety, and have some minor tile care and maintenance requirements.

Porcelain tile slip ratings

All of our porcelain tiles are manufactured with an R11 anti-slip finish. This means that they provide enhanced resistance against slips, and can be used in areas which get wet, such as bathrooms, kitchens and in this case, outdoors!

Porcelain tile care and maintenance

For the most part, porcelain tiles can be maintained relatively easily, just by sweeping, vacuuming and/or wiping clean. Occasionally, it’s useful to use a porcelain cleaner which is suitable for indoor and outdoor use.
