How Porcelain Paving Is Manufactured

Posted on 3rd March 2022

A luxurious, high-quality paving solution that delivers stunning results to transform patios, gardens, and any indoor space; porcelain paving is the new flooring trend soaring the market.

Porcelain paving is manufactured in a very specific way using a combination of sands, clays, and other minerals. The mixture is then pressed into a mould at high pressure and baked in a high-temperature kiln.

The vitrification process that comes next is what makes porcelain paving incredibly durable and non-porous, which is what sets it apart from natural stone.

The non-porous formation of the product means that porcelain paving is naturally stain, mould and moss-resistant. In most cases, it will keep its original colour and clean look with basic cleaning using a sweeping brush and warm soapy water with a cloth.

Low porosity of the product also ensures that porcelain paving is not affected by changes in temperature, no matter whether hot or cold. This means that there is no risk of frost build-up or the printed colour and overall appearance changing or fading due to direct sunlight.

As well as this, vitrification increases the overall strength of the porcelain slabs and aids resistance to scratches, dents, and abrasions. Elements including quartz, silica, and feldspar are combined with the clay at high temperatures to create a more uniform appearance and build on the strength of the slabs.

The paving material is then dried and printed on or coloured before being fired in the kiln at temperatures as high as 1,200 degrees Celsius. Following this, it is then slowly cooled, which is a part of the process which is just as important as heating.

All of our porcelain paving products are also manufactured with a riven R11 anti-slip to combat slips, trips, and falls. A common misconception of porcelain is that the surface becomes slippery in wet weather but this is not the case due to the manufacturing process.

In addition, due to considerable advancements in porcelain inkjet printing technology, there is now more choice in porcelain paving than ever before when it comes to colour, effect, or style.

Variations of wood, stone, and slate are all entirely achievable. Plus, size is always consistent throughout each batch because the paving is both calibrated and rectified to form sharp and square edges.
